4th Year Medical Student : My Thesis Journey Part 1

Dear readers,

First of all, this time, I have decided to write what I want and being bold in my opinion. You may choose to dislike and it does not matter to me. Either way, thank you for spending time reading the confession of mine =)

I am currently in my fourth year doing medicine in Jakarta. And soon, on September am gonna be upgraded to fifth year. Time flies? Yes. It did fly but it was not smooth sailing. A roller coaster ride? Maybe. But that's what life is all about.

Ok. Enough.

By the way, as some of you might noticed, I, sometimes, posted congratulatory photos on my Instagram stories - to celebrate friends who are finally done and dusted with their thesis. But I never posted mine. Why? Haha because I have not finished it yet. But I set a goal to settle 'em by August this year. Wish me luck!

My thesis journey ain't like everyone else. And of course everyone's journey is different to another too but okay. I'll just write how mine looks like. The thesis things begun on August 2018. During the early period, there were process of 'cari judul', 'cari jurnal penelitian' and bla bla bla. I had my first 'judul' on September 2018 and had it registered with the thesis unit, started writing the proposal and finished it on January 2019. Holll!! It was when I bumped into my first challenge.

My supervisors wanted me to work on a thesis which involve the real patients and not students at the campus. Hence, my sample at that time was the old folks residing at the care centre. Not to mention, I had to deal with the campus procedure before carrying the research outside and I had to deal with the centre procedure too. And the procedure. Huh. There were tons of procedures when at last, the centre did not really cooperate. Like, dude!! I have my 'seminar proposal' the next day but how could I proceed when things were not ready. So I asked permission to postpone my 'seminar proposal' and yes it got postponed.

On February 2019, my supervisors suggested to change the whole proposal. Can you imagine? I was given a new 'judul' on the spot and they asked me to move on with this one. I was left with no option. I deleted my previous proposal and started from nothing, for the second time! It was honestly tiring for me to do it all over again when I actually had classes to attend, exams to sit and organization to manage. I rarely had time doing the proposal but thank god I had them finished on August 2019.

I know, it is actually kinda late for me.

Oh instead of doing, ONLY, the proposal, I have to create the questionnaire too because I have not found any that is suitable to use. Can you see just how much times I spent on this? When everyone is ready to jump into the next chapter, I just started to crawl. Slowly.

Huhu. I am trying to be okay.

My sample/ subject this time, is family members of cancer patients at D hospital. Sounds convincing and I felt all excited. Little did I know there was another challenge waiting ahead. I don't know where exactly to start. Dr. Y (my first supervisor) asked me to contact her friend, Dr. M who works at palliative unit in D hospital. So I did. I asked to meet her to discuss about the research I am about to conduct and that I need her help to make sure everything is gonna be alright with the hospital when...

She.... Actually.... Checked..... My..... Proposal....

And asked to revise a few (!) before coming back again to pass the permission letter. Speechless. I wanted to scream. Just please. The proposal was approved by both supervisors and now I have to add her into my supervisors' list. I. Am. Sad. - it was 9.30pm WIB and Aishah was there too.

So what did I do next? I went to consult with my supervisor again and she told me the proposal was good hence we only changed a few words just to satisfy everyone. Due to schedule, I went to D hospital again on December 2019, alone, secretly to pass the permission letter without Dr. M knowing haha. It is not illegal btw. Chill.

Days passed but I did not receive any reply.

To my surprise...
